Cyclones Break Out the Brooms on Mothers Day

The Cyclones spent Mother's Day sweeping, unfortunately for their moms it was not at home. It took a lot of hard work and an inspired effort on Sunday afternoon but the Cyclones managed to sweep the weekend series with the Manhasset Stars by scores of 2-0 and 3-2.

Saturday's game featured what was likely the fastest goal to start a game in Cyclone history as Marissa was the beneficiary of an excellent corner kick from Anna L and tapped in her 5th career goal. The Cyclones continually dominated the game, but had to wait for the closing minutes before Jenna put the game away with her 2nd goal in three games.

Sunday started out much like saturday with Cyclones getting an early lead. The build up to the first goal was a thing of beauty as Anna L, switched the field from the left side to the right from about 30 yards out, Maureen took Anna's pass and made a perfect feed to Jordan on the wing, Jordan cut through 2 Manahasset defenders and found Jenna open in front for the one timer from 7 yards out. At that point the suddenly prolifc midfielder had sole posession of the Cyclones scoring lead for the spring.

The Stars battled hard and just before halftime, brokethrough to take a 2-1 lead.

After hearing it from the coaching staff the Cyclones came out on fire in the second half. All 16 Cyclones battled hard as they started dominating. Dana playing her best soccer of the season, fought hard for a loose ball in front of the Stars net, leading to a rebound blast from Jordan to tie the game at 2.

Dana continued to show what she could do later in the half when she looped the game winner past a helpless Stars keeper and give the Cyclones mom a reason to smile while leaving the field.

Deniz, with support from Ariel, Alexa, Sabrina, A.B. & Anna held the Stars off the board in the second half. No small feat with Lisa S out of the line up. Maureen, Lisa R, Rachel, Elena and Kathleen put up a real battle to keep the ball deep in the Manhasset side of the field in the final minutes. Marissa & Jamie had a strong game on offense breaking down the Stars defense.

Cyclones Push Tigers To The Brink

The Cyclones went into the match with 1st place Mineola as decided underdogs, but as they had last Columbus Day, it was the Cyclones who would set the tone. Both teams had chances in the first half, but the Cyclones defense and Goalkeeper Deniz remained cool and calm despite having to face a penalty shot at the very end of the half, a shot that sailed over the goal.
The Cyclones were on the march in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty kick after a Mineola defender handled the ball in the box. Anna L the Cyclones designated penalty kicker blasted home the 1st goal of the game and it was the Cyclones holding a 1-0 lead, just like the last time these two teams met. It was also the 1st goal the Tigers had allowed this season.
Inspired by the Cyclones scoring the Tigers woke up and started to push the ball back at the Cyclones. However, it was Deniz in goal who was the star of the game making critical saves, including an excellent one on a high shot going to the upper corner. Eventually the Cyclones wore down and fell behind 2-1. They never gave up and still had more chances, but could not get the game tying goal. The Cyclones will travel to Mineola on June 14th to get their revenge.

Cyclones Declaw Pantherettes

The Cyclones broke a 3 game losing streak by beating the Pantherettes 4-0 at Harbor Links. The Cyclones had only 11 players on hand at game time, but the Pantherettes only had 8. It didn’t take the Cyclones too long to take advantage.
Elena scored her first goal as a Cyclone as she blasted in a rebound for a 1-0 lead. Before NHP got it’s 11h player on the field Jordan scored 2 times to increase the advantage by 3 goals, it was Jordan’s first multi-goal game as a Cyclone.
The Cyclones got solid performances up and down the lineup. Jenna was rewarded for her solid midfield play with a trip to the offensive line and capped of the scoring midway through the 2nd half.

Cyclones Waldbaum Winners

In their 3rd attempt the Cyclones won their 1st ever Waldbaums Cup match beating the HBC Cougars 3-2 at the POB Travel Fields. The Cyclones got off to a 1-0 lead on a picture perfect deflection by Marissa on a beautiful cross from Dana. Although the game was evenly matched the Cougars were able to grab a 2-1 halftime edge.
The Cyclones came out strong in the second half applying consistent pressure. The effort paid off when Anna L was awarded a penalty kick which she buried to tie the game at 2.
Jamie’s left foot finish with 5 minutes to play was the game winner.
