Cyclones beat the Cyclones

No the Cyclones did not beat themselves, which is not unheard of. This time it is the POB Cyclones beating the Cold Spring Harbor (CSH) Cyclones. Rarely has the prospect of a victory looked dimmer than it did on Sunday morning as the POB Cyclones missing 3 of their 4 regular defensive starters traveled to CSH for a 9:00 AM start. Compounding matters for POB was the fact that 6 of the 12 players dressing were cited for breaking the 11:00 PM curfew by attending a Bat-Mitzvah the night before most not arriving back at their homes until 1:30 in the morning.
With the rain streaming down during the ride to CSH, it looked like the bleary eyed Cyclones might catch a break and get a rain out. But the weather would not cooperate and the rain stopped just in time for kick-off.
As things turned out the girls from POB were ready after all and took the play to CSH from the opening kick. After taking the ball in the chest and being assisted off the field the gutty Rachel T was ready moments later to blast home a ball that Dana put off the post to give the Cyclones a lead that they would not relinquish.
POB would continue to control the play in the second half when Dana would score her 1st of 2 goals on the day on a gorgeous feed from Marissa to make it 2-0. To their credit the "other" Cyclones did not quit and with Alexa down in the box with an injury CHS capitalized as the ref allowed play to continue and scored to make it a 1 goal game.
But, an illegal pass back to the keeper by CSH gave POB an indirect kick in the box. Jenna's subtle tap left the ball for Dana to deposit in the far corner thus icing the victory.
The win put the POB Cyclones in a virtual tie for 1st place at the Columbus Day break, the latest that the Cyclones have held that position since the fall of 2006, their first season.
After the game the coaching staff announced that there would be no players suspended for breaking the curfew at the Bat-Mitzvah the night before and are now actually encouraging the girls to stay out later.
