Cyclones Volunteer At Pee Wee Girls Festival

The Cyclones took a break from their vigorous training regimen to lend a foot at the Pee Wee Girls Soccer Festival. The girls each supervised a differnt activity station, allowing the Pee Wee's to show off their skills, like running, passing, dribbling and shooting. The Cyclones were blown away with how well the Pee wee's played, not to mention how adorable they were.

The Cyclones were happy that the club was offering soccer for such young girls, something that was not available for them when they were Pee Wee's. The girls were glad they could help and wer impressed with the festival which was superbly run by Division Head Jeff Krieger.

Oh by the way, directly following the festival, perhaps inspired by the Pee Wee girls, the Cyclones won their second consecutive home game by beating the New Hyde Park Pantherettes 1-0 on Dana's 31st career Cyclone goal. It was the 5th time the Cyclones had beaten the Pantherettes this season and the 6th time overall.

Cyclones Break The Streak...& PARTY!!!

It had been over 2 years, 24 months, 742 days, 106 weeks and 19 games since the Cyclones had won a home game. No matter how you add it up, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Travel Fields on Round Swamp Road was more of a house of horrors than a home field for the Cyclones.
It was on October 22nd 2005, the Cyclones had beaten the Oyster Bay Dream 4-0 on goals by Dana (of course), Kristen & Emily "Hyper" remeber them. Since then the Cyclones had lost 14 and tied 5 at the home field.
UNTIL TODAY!!!
The Cyclones outplayed the Dix Hills Demons on the way to a 2-0 win. In Cyclone like weather conditions the girls from POB held back the demons through a first half of running into the wind. In the 2nd half with the wind at their backs the Cyclones took over the game, Jordan scored her 6th career goal early in the half and Dana scored her team leading 30th late in the game to ice it. In between every Cyclone, Ariel, Kathleen, Deniz, Elena, Marissa, Jordan, Dana, Rosey, Lisa, Jamie, Jenna, Maureen, Alexa, Anna L, Sabrina, Rachel won their battles, hustled and earned their way to the victory. Even Anna N, on the verge of coming back from the injured list outcheered the opponents. Great Job Cyclones!!!

Cyclones Name Captains

With the Cyclones battling through a tough October the Cyclone coaching staff decided to pick more permanent captains. The captains were chosen on each players ability to verbally motivate and assist their team mates on and off the field. Each player chosen also demonstrates a consistent effort on the field. It was a tough decision with so many players being so strong in so many areas, but the staff decided that Jamie, Ariel and Alexa are currently the 3 players who best exemplify all of the leadership skills on a consistent basis. Rumor has it that next season the players may select the captains themselves...stay tuned.

Cyclones Ride the Rollercoaster

The Cyclones have experienced a roller coaster fall season thus far.

After beating the Pantherettes 2-0 at Harbor Links on September 29th on goals from Dana and Maureen, the Cyclones were all alone in second place with a 2 win, 1 loss record. Both wins had come on the road, with Rosey scoring the lone goal in a shut out win at Dix Hills.

At the North Hempstead Cup (see picture above) the Cyclones played some of their best and
not so best soccer of the season. Highlights were the 6 goal effort against New Hyde Park and the tough 2-1 loss to Mineola. The Cyclones also dominated a feisty Manhasset team whose keeper played one of the best games that a keeper had played against the Cyclones in their entire existence in a 2-2 tie. In the tournament the Cyclones got 3 goals from Jamie, 2 goals from Anna L & Maureen with Jordan, Alexa and Marissa adding 1 goal each.

With Anna N sidelined with an injured hand, the Cyclones struggled their way through the rest of October going winless in the remaining 4 games. But, with one month remaining in the season the Cycloned continue to develop. The 17 player team has started to communicate better on the field. The newer players have begun to grasp the responsibilities of all of the different positions. November promoses to be a good month.

It's Official Cyclones Welcome Three New Players

On the eve of a new season the Cyclones officially welcome their 3 newest edtions Elena, Deniz and Kathleen. Elena is no stranger to the team, having practiced with the girls several times in the spring, showing good speed and aggressiveness that the Cyclones hope to see more of this fall.

Deniz already a favorite with the Cyclone players before joining the team had an outstanding tryout in the spring and has been improving throughout the summer. Deniz performed well in her debut in last weeks Covanta Cup playing forward, midfield and fullback.

Kathleen joins the Cyclones after working out with the team all summer. The Cyclones staff recognized the great effort and determination exhibited at each of Kathleen's practices from start to finish. Kathleen also had a successful appearance in the Covanta Cup.

With the addition of these new faces the Cyclones bid farewell to Ravid who moved on to play with the XP. Ravid had a tremendous year with the Cyclones, rising rapidly from new player to reliable veteran. Although she could play any position on the pitch, Ravid was an outstanding defender who will be sorely missed.

Cyclones Thrive With A Little Help From Their Friends

It took a sequence of events that occurred during a short period in the second half of the Cyclones 1st game in the Covanta Tournament to notice that something special was happening.
The Cyclones were trailing 2-0 to eventual tournament winners Merrick with about 10 minutes to play when star guest player Kelly Iovino sent a harmless looking shot at the Merrick keeper. The keeper misplayed the ball and then fell down. As she reached back to recover the ball, it was too late, the ball had crossed the goal line and the Cyclones were back in the game. Just minutes later a Merrick forward found herself in a situation that strikers can only dream about, all alone with the ball, facing only the goal keeper Lisa Soehngen from 6 yards out. The striker blasted the ball, but the shot was sent directly into the reliable arms of the waiting keeper to keep the Cyclones within a goal.
Following Soehngen’s punt and with literally seconds remaining the Cyclones other star guest player Ali Gungor took a shot that the Merrick keeper did well to keep out, but Gungor emphatically blasted the rebound in to the net to tie the match. By the time Merrick regrouped and lined up for the kickoff the final whistle blew.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second half against a U-13 team, the U-12 Cyclones had come back to tie the game, yes something special was happening.
In the second game against fellow U-12 Floral Park, the Cyclone jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the very familiar left leg of the teams all time leading scorer Dana Mass. After Gungor, who ended up scoring a goal in each game, added a 3rd goal the Cyclones controlled play trying to work some of the other players into to offense. After closing it out with a 3-1 win the Cyclones were tied for 1st with Merrick after day 1.
Day 2 started out with a bang, 2 quick Dana Mass goals put the Cyclones in front of the NHP Pantherettes. The score was 4-0 at halftime after Jordan Allen & Maureen Bradley tickled the twine later in the half. After Ali Gungor scored early in the 2nd half the Cyclones pulled back and worked on their passing and possession game. The Pantherettes were able to get 2 goals back, but they never really threatened and the Cyclones cruised 5-2.
Game 4 would end up being the most critical game of the weekend as the Cyclones went up against the U-13 Oyster Bay Eclipse, the largest and most physical of all the opponents they would face. Ali Gungor gave the Cyclones the early 1-0 lead, which lasted until the final seconds of the 1st half when the Eclipse tied it.
What stood out most throughout the second half of this fiercely contested match was the high level of determination and skill on display from the entire Cyclones roster. Lots of credit goes to Jamie Reich and Lisa Soehngen for solid goalkeeping in this 1-1 tie.
Although the tie in game 4 meant that the Cyclones were virtually eliminated from a shot at the Covanta Cup, second place fell well within their grasp if they could take care of their nemesis from Levittown, the Levittown Lunachicks.
The Lunachicks were clearly not the same team that they were in the past and the Cyclones were a team on a mission, The Cyclones saw Dana Mass score 2 goals a game for the 3rd time in the tournament increasing her all-time team leading career total to 26 goals, Kelly Iovino and Ali Gungor also added goals. But more team highlights were to come.
In the second half both Marissa Hauser & Rachel Trueman scored their first Cyclone goals causing the sideline to erupt with joy. Both players had outstanding weekends playing the best soccer of their Cyclone careers.
The 6-1 win over Levittown meant that the Cyclones had finished the weekend in 2nd place, the highest tournament finish in team history.
There were many heroes who did not score during the tournament, but were no less instrumental in the success of the team. Anna Lin had her best games as a Cyclone, simply dominating the play in the midfield, with her ball control and pinpoint passing.
Jenna Malamud played a smart tournament playing with courage and an abundance of energy while also playing under control and being smart. Lisa Rosenstein had her best tournament as a Cyclone, playing with the edge that elevates her game. Lisa came very close to tapping home her second career left foot goal.
It has now become common place to expect Ariel Harned to shut down opposing wingers from her right fullback position. She once again demonstrated her coolness under pressure, steering many possible chances for the opponents to safety for the Cyclones. Ariel came close to scoring as well during a reluctant cameo appearance on offense on Sunday.
The tandem of goal keeper and field players Jamie Reich and Lisa Soehngen have also become a great weapon as both players continued to prove to be factors in goal and on offense for Jamie and defense for Lisa.
Deniz Harned’s Cyclone debut was a solid one. Deniz barely missed her first goal on Saturday against Floral Park. Meanwhile she was one of the few Cyclones to play at Forward, Midfield & Defense playing well in all 3 spots.
Hard working Kathleen Donovan also made her Cyclone debut. Kathleen had some great moments including some extended time on forward pressuring the Levittown defense in the tournament finale.
In contrast Ravid Granov made her farewell performance with the Cyclones a memorable one as she set up Jordan Allen with a beautiful thread the needle pass leading to a breakaway and a Cyclone goal. Ravid has improved greatly in her one year as a Cyclone and the team honored her achievements after the game.
The Cyclones left the Covanta Tournament proudly clutching the 2nd place plaques that they had worked so hard to earn. With a little help from their friends, Ali & Kelly, the Cyclones have kicked off the Fall season in outstanding style. Maybe something special is happening.

Janine Cappello Joins the Cyclone Family

Long Island Rough Riders defender Janine Cappello has joined the Cyclones as the new team trainer. Janine is a long island native who is a former captain of the Hofstra Pride Womens Soccer team and has also played for the New York Magic. The Cyclones are excited to have an experienced player like Janine to help them get to the next level.

POB Cyclones Kick in at Relay for Life

The Cyclones inspired by our relay team captain and cancer survivor Lori Lee Noreman entered into the relay for life. It took us a while to finally decide upon getting involved, but there was enough interest and most importantly Lori Lee was willing to do the leg work to get us started.

We started collecting money just about a week before the relay and up to now have collected over $2515 as a team. There are more donations that have been sent by mail by some of the Cyclones which have yet to be registered on our site.

The Cyclones were the 5th place team in the race for donations and featured the 5th highest donor in Jenna Malamud. Jenna had already had a great day saturday when she scored her first Cyclone goal in a game against Syosset.

The relay was a great success and every one connected with this team thanks everyone who donated on behalf of the Cyclones.

Must be something in the water in East Fishkill!

The Cyclones made their first true road trip on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend as they traveled to East Fishkill. The One day trip included 3 games against tough competition. The Jericho Force, undefeated leaders in our N5 Division, the Greenburgh Bulldogs from Westchester Division 3 and the East Fishkill Blue Ravens from East Hudson Division 2.
Although the girls were disappointed not to have Dana, Alexa & Sabrina available (those 3 players had accounted for 15 of the teams 18 goals in the fall) they were thrilled to welcome Mia R a standout Goalkeeper and field player for the POB Wildcats.
It was a gorgeous day in Dutchess County.
The Cyclones lost 4-1 to Jericho, but the game was much more hotly contested than the score would indicate. With Mia available to play keeper the Cyclones had the rare opportunity to place both Jamie and Lisa S on the field at the same time. Jamie scored her team leading third goal of the season early in the second half. But, the highlight had to be the entire commitment to the game by all 14 of the players.
After enjoying a 1 hour break of blow up rides and snacks the Cyclones took the field against a very physical and skilled team from Greenburgh. It was probably the best single game the girls played all season. They constantly won the 50/50 balls and out hustled their Westchester opponents all game. At halftime the girls could here the Bulldogs coaches screaming about being out hustled and outplayed completely. His speech did not work. Although the Cyclones were able to create several scoring chances, evidenced by Mia hitting the post, there was to be no victory. The Cyclones were bitten by 2 Bulldog goals, one with seconds remaining in the first half, the second coming late in the second half in a 2-0 loss.
The joke is that there must be something in the water that keeps the Plainview kids small. Playing against kids a year older usually doesn’t help either. But there really must be something “fishy” in the water in East Fiskill, because they are growing them awfully large there. In their final match of the tournament the diminutive Cyclones played the “Giant” Blue Ravens of east Fishkill. It was never really close as at least 7 of the Blue Ravens could probably dunk a basketball and the feisty Cyclones were tired.
I think we all enjoyed hanging out on a beautiful day in the country, I think we all recognized how well the girls competed and enjoyed themselves.
Finally the highlight was the dinner at Bella Vista (thanks to the parents), where you could feel the success of the day in the attitude of everyone involved and by the fact that everyone who made the trip, made it back in one piece, tired, but happy!

Merry Merry Month of May?

May proved to be one of the more difficult months in Cyclone history. After stunning Baldwin the first week of the season and collecting a point with a tie at home against Wantagh-Seaford the Cyclones went winless the rest of the way.
There were some highlights, like watching the Atlantic Beach Drawbridge go up and down while losing at Hewlett-Lawrence.
There was Dana, the Cyclones all-time scoring leader, playing on one foot, reaching the 20 goal plateau for her career as the Cyclones played a good second half against New Hyde Park. Unfortunately we were trailing 3-0 at halftime.
There was the outstanding defensive effort in a 2-0 home loss to Oceanside.
The worst of it was losing Dana for rest of the month and the first 2 games in June with that same injury.
The highlight of May had to be the trip to East Fishkill.

Captain Phil's Corner

This is Phil, captain for the Cyclone soccer game on 4/21/07 vs Wantagh-Seaford. You guys all did amazing. Jamie was in goal the entire game, but she made amazing saves, and she stayed in there and we tied!

Alexa sprinted the whole game and played amazing offense. I think we have found Anna L's new position! It was amazing when she scored! It was so close to being a corner kick. Dana, Ariel, Ravid and Anna N were all amazing on Defense! I thought we should have won because we played so well! Maureen, Lisa R & Sabrina were on midfield and did really well also. Marissa, Rachel and the Jordster did really,very well. We all played amazing and we would not have done it without everyone. I was very proud to be captain of this game.

The POB Cyclones had a rough start of the season, but they are back in action! During the match against the Baldwin Eagles, we barley had enough players to put on the field! With 9 players, the Cyclones played outstandingly well. In the 1st half Lisa S did some amazing goaltending. On defense, we had Dana, Jenna and Ariel and they stopped every ball that came to them, like a wall! On mid-field, Anna N and Lisa R were making amazing passes like we have never lost a game! On offense, we had Jamie, Rachel, and Sabrina playing at the top of there game! TOOT! 2nd half and the score is still 0-0. Lisa S is still in goal, Sabrina is on midfield, and Jamie (BOB) is on offense. Jamie dribbles up...shoots...and scores!! The score is now 1-0 POB! But in a matter of time they get one back. The score is now 1-1. But the game is not over yet! Jamie scored another goal to make it a 2-1 game. TOOT! That's the game! The Cyclones WON!! Excellent game played by the POB Cyclones with only 9 players!!!

Captains Corner With Captain Jordan

The POB cyclones were indestructible against the Syosset Dynamite. Even though the Cyclones lost, doesn’t mean we didn’t play good. Lisa S. did an amazing job on defense and she also did great in goal. Jamie was a star goalie in the game along with the many other positions. Lisa R & Maureen made great passes just like Rachel did. Alexa scored a goal making the score two to one Dynamite. Sabrina made great throws, while Anna Lin used her big kick to help the team. Jordan ran fast along with Ravid and Anna N. Dana was awesome on offense just like Jenna. Too bad Marissa was hurt and Ariel couldn’t be there. Dave, Lon, and Rich were great coaches.

Cyclones Suffer Another Bad Break

The Cyclones suffered a bad break last week when it was learned that Marissa had broken her wrist. The injury will sideline the star midfielder/forward for 3 weeks. The first year Cyclone had been training hard all winter and shown great improvement. Always among the most eager players to get onto the field the team wishes their #15 a speedy recovery and hope to have her back on the pitch for there April 21st match with Wantagh-Seaford.

Spring in the Air

The Cyclones remain in Nassau Division 5 for the Spring 2007 season. After a rough start in the fall, the Cyclones finished with a winning record over the second half of the season which included a 3rd place finish at the North Hempstead Cup.
The fall was filled with many pleasant surprises highlighted by the performance of our newest players, Anna, Marissa, Ariel, Ravid & Sabrina. Sabrina's 3 goals were 3rd best on the team and another pleasant surprise.
With the addition of Rachel to the roster the Cyclones are psyched up for the spring!
With old foes like Syosset & Oceanside back in our division and upstarts Hewlett-Lawrence & Little Neck who dominated Division 6 in the fall, this season is shaping up to be another good challenge for the girls from POB. The Cyclones will also meet familiar teams like New Hyde Park, Baldwin, Lynbrook-East Rockaway, Wantagh-Seaford & Jericho.

Cyclones Welcome Number 42

The Cyclones are thrilled to welcome Rachel to the team this spring. Rachel was present at one of our early training sessions with Kaz, and showed true Cyclone grit, by still showing up to practice again with the team and wanting to join the roster. The coaching staff is excited to add another enthusiastic athlete to the mix. Rachel will sport the #42!

Cyclones have a Blast

The Cyclones won their second game and their second road game of the fall, 2-0 over the Rockville Centre Blasters on Saturday. Although the teams appeared to be evenly matched, the Cyclones combined the techniques learned from training to their already established aggressive style of play to come out on top. Every player on the team is showing improvement from the start of the season and should be proud of the effort. Thanks to Ariel for setting a great example by showing up and supporting her teammates.
After collecting money from all of the parents and coaches the Cyclones were responsible for collecting $400 is donations for Levittown U-9 Soccer player Mairead Ryan, who is battling Ewings Sarcoma. The donation was delivered in person on Monday. The Cyclones family has been repsonsible for $1100 in charitable donations in 2006. No doubt our greatest accomplishment as a team.

Cyclones Suffer First Real Loss

The losses we suffer on the field are never a complete loss. There is always a lesson to be learned and winning efforts to be praised despite the score. Losing Ariel to a fractured elbow at Sundays practice is our first real loss as a team. Ariel's cheerful personality and positive attitude will be missed on the field for the rest of the season. Hopefully Ariel will be able to join us at some of our games.

Cyclones Turn the Leopards into Pussycats

The Cyclones put together another complete performance in a 5-2 road victory at New Hyde Park. The offense came out flying as Dana scored 3 times in the first half to give POB a 3-1 halftime lead. It was the first Cyclone hat trick since the Oceanside tournament in September of 2005. The Cyclones respected NHP and came out in the second half with the same hustle and commitment as they did to start the game. With the score 3-2 midway through the 2nd half, Sabrina sent the Cyclones sideline into a celebration by scoring her first goal to give the Cyclones some insurance. The game was put out of reach when Ravid scored several minutes later to make the score 5-2. It was an outstanding game by the entire team, offense, defense, midfield and goalkeepers.

Cyclones Earn Some Hardware in North Hempstead

Congratulations to the Cyclones on a 3rd place finish at the 2006 North Hempstead Cup.
The Cyclones, led by their stingy defense allowed only 3 goals in the 4 game event. The 1-0 victory over Port Washington in the final game on Sunday providing the points needed to secure the 3rd place finish. The 3-0 victory over New Hyde Park in the first game on Saturday was the Cyclones first win of the fall season and was as complete a team victory as this team has had since being formed in June of last year.
Every player contributed to the overall success and the coaches are proud. Alexa, Jordan & Dana supplied the scoring, while Marissa and Sabrina shined in their tournament debuts, clearly utilizing the skills obtained from training.
Maureen, Rosey, Jenna & Anna N were outstanding in the midfield, playing a gritty and effective tournament, turning the 50/50 balls into 80/20 balls in our favor.
Anna L anchored the tournaments second most effective defense, with tremendous support from a calm and cool, Ravid & Ariel who handled anything that was thrown at them all weekend. Finally, we could never do it without the toughest goalies in town! Jamie playing the first half of all four games always kept the Cyclones in the game. Lisa playing the second half of each game again performed magic, this time robbing Rockville Centre (4th Place) from a sure goal that may have been the difference between getting and not getting 3rd place.

Rich, Lon, Dave and all of the parents were thrilled that the Cyclones were rewarded for the effort with a third place trophy!
This team had gone thorough a rough stretch of results, but never gives up. We are all proud of the hard work and hustle these 14 girls show. WAY TO GO CYCLONES!!!

Cyclones Make Statement in Opener

The Cyclones opened the fall season against their freindly rivals from down south...the Plainedge Magic. After roster changes, tryouts and a turnover of 8 players in total, the Cyclones are virtually a new team. With all of those changes the big question was how would the "New" 2006 Cyclones respond? The initial results were great!
All 14 Cyclones made the statement that they will not give an inch to any team, by playing with the grit, determination and hustle that have made this team famous from South Oyster Bay Road to Round Swamp Road. Even though this was the first game of the season and the Cyclones have had only 1 practice with their entire roster they showed great stamina and teamwork in cutting the score to 2-1 on Jerry's 2nd career goal on a rebound of a DJ shot, late in the second half and coming within a foot of tying the score on another DJ blast, just seconds before the final whistle.
Congratulations to Ariel, Ravid, Sabrina, Marissa & Anna for doing such a great job in their first game.

Cyclones Fall Game & Training Schedule

Below is our complete fall schedule. Unless told otherwise, all home games will be played at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Lower Travel Fields on Round Swamp Road. Directions to away games will be emailed the week of the game, as will uniform color needed. As always players must arrive at the field, home or away 30 minutes prior to the game time. That is 30 minutes prior to the times listed on the games below. If you see a conflict or you will be unable to attend a game please let the coaches know as soon as possible.

The Cyclones will be competing in Nassau Division 5. We have already played against 4 of the teams in this division, winning one against Plainedge, losing one against Levittown and tying two against New Hyde Park & Rockville Centre. It will be a fun and competitive season.

This fall the Cyclones are excited to announce that they will be trained by Kaz Gungor, the Director of Player Development for the United States Academy of Soccer. Training will take place at 4:30 PM every Friday at Jamaica Avenue.

Cyclones Earn Sportsmanship Honor

Congratulations go to everyone involved with the Cyclones for winning a Bronze Chevron for Sportsmanship from the LIJSL for our performance this past spring season. We finished in 2nd place in our division for sportsmanship, missing 1st place by just 5 points. However, our consistent week in and week out performance has earned us a Bronze Chevron which can be worn on the sleeve of our uniforms.
It is an achievement that takes a positive effort from everyone who attends our games that includes players, coaches, parents & siblings. The Cyclones are one of only 2 POB travel teams to be recognized for sportsmanship out of the 24 travel teams in the club.

Magic Night for Cyclones

The Cyclones joined the Plainedge Magic for a halftime scrimmage at Saturday nights Lady Riders game. All girls on both teams had a great time while playing on the big field. The Lady Riders featuring our own super trainer Allison Mullen crushed the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms 7-0.

Shorthanded Cyclones Step It Up

For the first time as a team the Cyclones dressed only 9 players when they took the field in the cold & windy rain Saturday at the Travel Fields. Facing the New Hyde Park Lady Leopards all 9 girls put together a complete effort.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the 2nd half "The Jordster" took a throw-in from Anna, beat 2 defenders and buried her first Cyclone goal into the back of the net. The momentum continued as "KW" scored a huge goal to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. The Lady Leopards hung tough and snuck in a goal to tie the game with just a couple of minutes to go. The game finished at 2-2.
Playing without, Hyper, Action & Lisa S, the rest of the girls stepped up their game:
Rosie had her best game yet, barely missing 2 goals in the 2nd half & setting up her teammates with smart and accurate passes. DJ, AL & KW showed their versatility playing several different positions and doing it well. Phil, The Jordster & Moby, dominated in the midfield winning most of the 50/50 balls they went for and running all day without quitting. Alexa and Anna & DJ played excellent defense, working together covering both sides of the field and supporting the offense.
"Bob" put in another great effort in goal. She has continuously kept the Cyclones in every game she's played and never gives up.
The Cyclones will need all hands on deck as they travel to Albertson for next week.

POB TIE RVC

The Cyclones got a second half goal by DJ, to come from behind and tie the Rockville Centre Blasters 1-1 Saturday at Round Swamp Road. Playing with a new formation, it took the Cyclones a full half just to get used to their surroundings. During that time "Bob" kept them in the game, stopping a penalty shot and reaching up high to grab a breakaway shot that was a certain goal. One RVC parent was heard lamenting that "their goalie is killing us".
As the whistle blew for the second half you could see the tide turn the Cyclones way. Outside midfielders, The Jordster, Lisa S & Phil used their speed to thwart the Blaster offense and control the perimter. Meanwhile the other outside midfielder Moby, had a sure goal kicked off the line by an alert RVC defender. The middle of the field was controled by Action who set up DJ's goal and Rosie who came fractions of an inch from one timing a goal of her own.
The Cyclone forwards were threatining throughout the second half as KW, Hyper & DJ rotated attacking the net.
The defense was it's old stingy self led by Big Al.
Big Al was supported by a rotating group of KW, DJ, Hyper & Lisa S, who kept the Blasters away from the Cyclone net for most of the second half.
KW & Hyper showed tremendous versatility by playing all field positions and doing so well.
The coaches were impressed by Jerry (touchdown) who although she was unable to play, still turned up to root for her team, thus rewarding her with a captains band for the game.

The Cyclones opened up the spring season on the road against the Orange Wave of Oceanside. Another excellent all out effort by the girls. Even when they fell behind 2-0 they battled back. Moby won a 50/50 ball that sprung Hyper on a breakaway. Hyper had to fight off an aggressive Oceanside defender, which she did with her usual grit and burried the ball in the back of the net. But the Cyclones had to settle for a 3-1 result.
Next up RVC Blasters saturday at Round Swamp Road.

Cyclones Promoted to Division 4

The Cyclones were rewarded for their good fall season with promotion to LIJSL Nassau Division 4. They will be joined by the toughest teams in their old division, Albertson, Massapequa, Syosset & Oceanside. Joining these teams are the Garden City Tigers (winners of the Refuel Tournament in the fall), Levittown Lunachicks & RVC (Rockville Centre)Blasters. These teams went a combined 23 Wins, 3 Losses & 1 Tie in the LIJSL NY Division in the fall. The NHP (New Hyde Park) Lady Leopards & Levittown Thunder also join the Division. Gone are the Manhasset, Oyster Bay, Wantagh-Seaford, Port Washington & Plainedge teams that the Cyclones beat last season.
This will be a big challenge for the Cyclones who have earned the honor.

Name That Cyclone

The weather outside was frightful...

The Cyclones started off 2006 by going undefeated in the East Meadow World Cup Tournament, cruising to an impressive third place finish.
The Tournament featured 3 0-0 ties, a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 win vs the host team.
As has been their calling card, all 12 Cyclones gave 100% effort, fighting for every ball and winning most of them.
Dana punched in all 3 goals to lead the offense.
Anna was recognized by the tournament committee as the Outstanding Defensive Player of the entire division.
The coaches were faced with the difficulty of choosing a team MVP, a position they were not relishing. How do you recognize one player, when all 12 try so hard and perform so well?
That decision was initially made easy as Jamie made amazing save after amazing save, literally lifting the crowd out of their seats. She was outstanding and deserving of the honor.
Then Lisa had to complicate matters by putting on the best single game display of goalkeeping I have ever seen. There were at least 7 or 8 point blank chances that Lisa came up with.
Unfortunately, tournament officials would not allow the Cyclones to pick multiple MVP's.
A great start to 2006!

Holiday Spirit

Tis the night after Christmas and the Menorah is lit
We've finally gotten a chance to stop and sit

Name that Cyclown?

This Cyclone is known more for her Soccer skills, than for her clowning around. She can play any position, she's even play goalie, although not this season.
Her first half against Albertson might have been the best half of soccer any Cyclone played all year.

Cyclones Finish Season On A Positive Note

The Cyclones first travel season ended Saturday evening with the team party at Cugini's. All players and coaches were present. There were smiles all around as the entire team celebrated what was an outstanding season.
Earlier in the day the Cyclones had played what was considered by the coaches their best half of the season, truly dominating the play against the first place Aces from Albertson.
In front of a hostile crowd the Cyclones hit the post and missed by inches as the Aces were kept on their heels. Unfortunately, when the Aces were able to get chances, they scored.
The tempo of the game seemed to change when the Cyclones resident thug, the Jordster was whistled for her second foul and told by the official that if she did that again, “I’ll kick you out of the game”. Eventually the Cyclones succumbed to the division champs in the second half.
Rich, Lon & Dave are proud of every player and wish to thank the parents for their generosity & support.

This Cyclone is known for her dance moves as much as her soccer moves. Never one to shy away from the ball or from a chance to perform a song in front of the team.

When is a loss not a loss?

When you learn from the experience and use what you've learned to help you in the future.
The Cyclones lost a tough game to the Massapequa Fire 3-0 at Round Swamp Road.
The Fire were easily the best team the Cyclones had faced this season and it wasn't long before the Fire had a 2-0 lead in the first half.
BUT
The Cyclones probably played their best soccer this season in the second half. As everyone who has watched this team knows they never quit. They attacked and attacked. They took shots, they hit the post, they made the Fire scramble defensively. If the Fire's goalie was an inch shorter the Cyclones would have scored.
The Cyclones are well aware of how proud the coaches and parents are of their growth and effort.
BUT
It it can't be overstated.
WE ARE ALL PROUD OF THE CYCLONES

Cyclones play like Dynamite!

The Jordster scored her first goal of the season midway through the 2nd half to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead over the Syosset Dynamite. But...it didn't count. Moments later the Dynamite scored the eventual game winning goal in a 3-1 Dynamite win.
The Cyclones played hard, fighting for every ball, while coming back from a 1-0 deficit on a big goal from DJ. But, the offside called on the Jordster goal seemed to be the turning point for the Cyclones in their first loss in 55 days, 10 hours 30 minutes and 45 seconds.
How far have these girls have come since June? They expect to win everytime they get on the field. They behave and play like winners and they handled the first loss with class.
They were Dynamite!

Nothing Plain About this Game

The Plainedge Magic and the Plainview-Old Bethpage Cyclones met at East Plain in Plainedge in one of the few games that were not rained out this weekend on Long Island. The game was anything but plain.
It was the most exciting game this season as the Cyclones had to come from behind against the Magic. The Magic scored early as #18, who wreaked havoc on the Cyclones all day, slipped through the defense and put a goal past the diving Lisa S.
The Cyclones came right back as Captain Emily "Hyper" tied the game at one just minutes later, driving a shot into the far right corner, her 3rd goal in the last 3 games.
The Cyclones capitalized on good passing as Jordan, Emily "Action" and Kristen's build up led to Maureen's one timer from the penalty spot, which soared over the outstretched arm of the keeper. It was Maureen's 3rd goal of the season.
Both teams had there chances, especially Plainedge's #18. But, Jamie and Lisa were a stonewall in the net, stopping everything that came there way. The Magic coach said after the game that the whole Cyclone team "should treat their goalies to Pizza and Ice Cream".
Lisa S, Kristen, Jenna and Jordan and played spledid outside defense to keep #18 from getting anything started in the second half.
Captain "Big Al" Anna had another strong effort on the defensive side.
The Plainview offense were smart and dangerous once again. Dana, Hyper, Rosie, Action, Maureen, Jenna and Krtisten were aggressive and smart leading to many good chances, in which the tall and intimidating Plainedge defense were pushed to the brink.
The girls were very happy to see Allison at the game, and I think Allison was just as excited to see how well the girls are playing.
The Magic were easily the toughest game in what is certainly becoming a Magic season for the Cyclones.

Cyclones Celebrate First Home Win

The Cyclones put together another complete team effort in beating the Manhasset Stars 5-0 Saturday at Round Swamp Road for their 1st home victory. Each girl played aggressive and smart soccer, passing, moving and supporting each other from start to finish.
"Hyper" Emily scored her first 2 goals of the year, the first on a penalty kick to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. Anna "Big Al" drilled home a magnificent strike from 18 yards out on a rebound from an Emily "Action" shot that hit the post, for her 1st goal of the season. The goal showed what the results can be when the defense supports the offense.
Lisa "Rosie" made it 3 nil when she smartly intercepted a goal kick and rifled her 1st goal of the year into the far corner.
In the second half, Jamie who had already hit a beautiful corner kick, scored her first goal, by staying in her position and being in the right place to make the score 4-0. "Hyper" celebrated her 1st start of the season on offense with a 2nd goal, to make the final score 5-0.
Lisa "the mad hatter" celebrated her 9th birthday with her first solo shut out.

Here's what didn't show up in the score sheet:
- Alexa and Jordan's strong defense, they continue to play their best soccer ever.
- Kristen, Maureen's passing and moving enabled their team mates to reap the rewards of their hard work.
- Jenna and Dana's agressive play, stopping every challenge on defense and breaking through on offense.
The Manhasset Stars played hard through out and will continue to improve with the hard work and never say die spirit they showed against the Cyclones.

The Cyclones coaches and parents are beaming with pride over the effort and enthusiasm the girls are playing with, no matter the outcome. They are a great group of girls with outstanding attitudes and an abundance of personality.

Cyclones Celebrate a Bunch of Firsts

This time the weatherman got it right. Forecasters on Friday Night issued a Cyclone warning for the Wantagh-Seaford areas of Long Island, and at 11:10 AM the Cyclone touched down.
The POB Cyclones won their FIRST ever LIJSL road game and got their FIRST ever LIJSL win against the spirited and well coached Seahawks of the Wantagh-Seaford Soccer Club.
Captain's Alexa and Anna, along with Jordan and Lisa S (who played through a sore leg the entire 2nd half), provided a defensive wall that took almost the entire game to breakthrough.
The best team effort to date, was in large part due to the hustle and battling of the offense. Kristen, Jenna, Lisa R and Dana kept hustling and winning loose balls all over the field.
Most impressive was the positioning and ball movement, that resulted in 3 goals and many chances. Head's up offense by Maureen gave the Cyclones a 1 goal lead, it was Maureen's 2nd goal of the year, her FIRST LIJSL goal. The pressure continued in the second half when Emily scored twice to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead. Her FIRST ever LIJSL goal was scored on a brilliantly placed penalty kick, going right below the crossbar. The second goal was the result of a play was started and finished by Emily. Emily played the ball across the field to Kristen, who one timed a pass ahead to Maureen who played the ball ahead to Emily, who had kept running the whole time. Emily finished the play with her 2nd career LIJSL league goal and her 7th goal of the season.
With Lisa S, nursing an injured leg at halftime, the Goaltending responsibilities fell entirely to Jamie, and once again Jamie did not dissapoint. Called upon to make at least 10 saves, due to the non-stop effort provided by the Seahawks, Jamie was once again up to the task. It was Jamie's third solo victory of the season, her FIRST ever LIJSL win.
The Seahawks, showed the kind of effort that will make them a great team for years to come. They never quit and scored the last goal of the game with 10 minutes to go. The Cyclones thank the Seahawks and their coaches for a well played and fun game.

Cyclones and Wave draw at Round Swamp Road

The Cyclones and the Orange Wave of Oceanside were already familiar with each other
going into their LIJSL season opener at the POB Travel Fields on Round Swamp Road this past Saturday. The Wave had rolled over the Cyclones 4-2 just 6 days before in the final game of the Preseason Labor Day Tournament in Oceanside. The score did not indicate how evenly matched the 2 teams played.
The stage was set for the rematch.
In a hard fought struggle that included some great defense and Goalkeeping the rematch ended in a scoreless tie. Jamie and Lisa S. played excellent in the net combining to shut out the Oceanside offense.
This week the Cyclones hit the road, travelling to Wantagh to play the Wantagh-Seaford Seahawks.

Cyclones Take 3rd at Oceanside

The Cyclones came home with a 3rd Place finish as they played their first official games as a travel team this weekend at the Oceanside Labor Day Tournament.
The Cyclones opened up with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Jericho. Emily "Action" (AKA-Frank) scored her second goal of the game late in the second half to give the Cyclones a final lead, that was preseved by an outstanding diving stop by Jamie (AKA-Bob) in the final seconds.
The Cyclones showed their world famous spirit pulling out a 1-1 tie with Syosset in Saturdays 2nd game. Dana's (AKA-DJ) blast midway through the second half and Lisa S's stellar goalkeeping kept the Cyclones unbeaten through Saturdays games.
Sunday started off with a bang as the Cyclones blasted Port Washington 5-0 behind goals from three different players including an Emily (AKA-Frank) hat-trick and Kristen's 1st goal of the tourney. Lisa R and Jenna (AKA-Phil) peppered the Port Washington Keeper with point blank shots only to be denied by the smallest of margins.
The Cyclones were slowed by the Plainedge Fury in a hard fought 2-0 loss. Most fans were still looking for their seats when the Fury opened up a 1-0 lead seconds into the game. The score stayed 1-0 throughout while the Cyclones battled and battled. Emily (AKA-Hyper) put in her typical, all-out hustle, bruising game, leading the Cyclones with 2 Band Aid's.
The Cyclones got off to a great start against the Oceanside Wave, when Maureen knocked in her 1st goal as a Cyclone on a gorgeous feed from Jordan (AKA-The Jordster) who saved her best game for the last game of the weekend. However, the strain of 3 full games in 4 a hour period took it's toll. By the time Kristen scored her 2nd of the tournament, the Wave had scored 4 times.
The Cyclones ended up in 3rd, losing only to the 1st and 2nd place teams.
For the other Cyclones it was a great showing. Alexa (AKA-Touchdown) played outstanding physical defense throughout the 5 games, never backing down or quitting. Anna was outstanding as well, doing a great job of supporting the forwards and communicating to her team mates. Jenna (Phil) seem to get stronger as the weekend wore on, playing with fearless tenacity and an all world smile. Lisa R, also saved her best for last, with another hustling effort in the last game.
The overall performance was outstanding. The passing and moving without the ball was a major improvement from June. These girls are fun to watch, and you better keep your eyes on them.
