The Cyclones made their first true road trip on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend as they traveled to East Fishkill. The One day trip included 3 games against tough competition. The Jericho Force, undefeated leaders in our N5 Division, the Greenburgh Bulldogs from Westchester Division 3 and the East Fishkill Blue Ravens from East Hudson Division 2.
Although the girls were disappointed not to have Dana, Alexa & Sabrina available (those 3 players had accounted for 15 of the teams 18 goals in the fall) they were thrilled to welcome Mia R a standout Goalkeeper and field player for the POB Wildcats.
It was a gorgeous day in Dutchess County.
The Cyclones lost 4-1 to Jericho, but the game was much more hotly contested than the score would indicate. With Mia available to play keeper the Cyclones had the rare opportunity to place both Jamie and Lisa S on the field at the same time. Jamie scored her team leading third goal of the season early in the second half. But, the highlight had to be the entire commitment to the game by all 14 of the players.
After enjoying a 1 hour break of blow up rides and snacks the Cyclones took the field against a very physical and skilled team from Greenburgh. It was probably the best single game the girls played all season. They constantly won the 50/50 balls and out hustled their Westchester opponents all game. At halftime the girls could here the Bulldogs coaches screaming about being out hustled and outplayed completely. His speech did not work. Although the Cyclones were able to create several scoring chances, evidenced by Mia hitting the post, there was to be no victory. The Cyclones were bitten by 2 Bulldog goals, one with seconds remaining in the first half, the second coming late in the second half in a 2-0 loss.
The joke is that there must be something in the water that keeps the Plainview kids small. Playing against kids a year older usually doesn’t help either. But there really must be something “fishy” in the water in East Fiskill, because they are growing them awfully large there. In their final match of the tournament the diminutive Cyclones played the “Giant” Blue Ravens of east Fishkill. It was never really close as at least 7 of the Blue Ravens could probably dunk a basketball and the feisty Cyclones were tired.
I think we all enjoyed hanging out on a beautiful day in the country, I think we all recognized how well the girls competed and enjoyed themselves.
Finally the highlight was the dinner at Bella Vista (thanks to the parents), where you could feel the success of the day in the attitude of everyone involved and by the fact that everyone who made the trip, made it back in one piece, tired, but happy!
